Phrasal Verbs


Phrasal verbs:
Verb + preposition (in, on, out, down, up, over, etc)

Depending on the tense, the verb change.

I am going out to the mall.
I go out to the mall .
I have gone out to the mall.
I went out to the mall.

He is giving up smoking.
He gives up smoking.
He has given up smoking.
He gave up smoking.



To….. = Break / Bring / get / give /  go / make / sign/ take / work
am/are/is …. = Breaking / bringing / giving / going / making / signing / taking / working
Was …. = broken / brought / got / given / went / made / signed / taken / worked





Break down:
(breaking/broke/broken)
 
1) to stop working properly

2) to separate into simpler pieces




Bring up:
(bringing/brought)
1) to take care of and teach (a child who is growing up)

2) to mention (something)



Get on:
(getting/gotten/got)
 
to be friendly with someone.


Get over:
(getting/gotten/got)
 
to stop feeling sick or stop being unhappy about (something)

Give in:
(giving, given, gave) 

 to agree to do something that you had earlier said "no" to.

Give up:
(giving, given, gave)  

to quit



Go on:
(going/gone/went)  
 
to continue doing something







Go out:
(going/gone/went)  
 
to leave your home for an activity

Make out:
(making/made)  

to understand



Make up:
(making/made)  

1) to create or invent (a story or a lie)

2) to put together different parts


Sign in:
(signing/signed)  

to write your name to show that you have arrived


Sign up:
(signing/signed
 
to add a name to a list in order for a person to get, do, or take

Take in:
(taking/taken/took)
  
to allow (water, air, food, etc.) to enter your body or mind


Take on:
to compete against (a person, team, etc.)



Take up:
to begin studying or practicing an activity, usually as a hobby


Take over:
to become in control



Work out:
to do physical fitness exercises




Work up:
to produce (something) by physical or mental effort

2) Research

How many people (or what percentage of) suffer from the health problem in the United Arab Emirates?

What lifestyle choices cause this health problem?

Explain the cause and effect of how the lifestyle choice leads to the health problem.

What are Doctor recommended solutions to the health problem?
Use these words in your solution: to, in order to, so, so that


3) Evidence from your life.

5) PowerPoint Presentation

Organize information in your PowerPoint to show...

* statistics from your research (or your infographic)
* results from your survey
* evidence from your life
* your slogan for your ad campaign
* your poster or advertisement
* your suggested diet or physical activity plan

* a description of the issue's solution (using words: to, in order to, so, so that)

6) Post presentation onto padlet/website




Project ELECTIVES (choose 2-3)

Create an ad/ commercial

Prepare a survey

Ask 10 specific questions about people’s lifestyle (on the topic of things that lead to health problems).

Remember to ask questions with simple answers. Provide answers for people to choose.

Post onto survey monkey, share your survey to get answers.


Suggest a diet, physical activity or medicine
which can help people.


Make up your own diet to suggest to people
Make up your own physical activity plan to suggest to people.


Infographics to show how many people in UAE are affected by this problem


Infographics use numbers and pictures to show information.

Use yours to talk about diet, population, lifestyle choices, from your research
