Unit 4 Project: Emirates Transportation Solutions

In groups of two (2) or three (3), you will make a Padlet, Keynote presentation, or iMovie.

You are an employee of a transportation consulting firm named:

Emirates Transportation Solutions

You have been hired by the government to fix a transportation problem in the UAE.

Some options for transportation problems:
CHOOSE ONE PROBLEM
Students do not commute quickly and safely enough from home to school.
Businessmen do not commute quickly and safely enough from RAK to Dubai.
Tourists do not travel quickly and safely enough to the top of Jebel Jais.
Drivers are using mobile phones while driving.
Pedestrians cannot safely cross the road.
Personal vehicles are not environmentally friendly.
There are many car accidents.
Parking lots are full.
Petrol use is too high.
 Create your own traffic problem

01) Describe the traffic Problem/Why is it a problem?

What are three to four consequences/effects that are caused by this problem?
How does this problem affect:
                   People’s schedules and productivity?
The safety of drivers, passengers, and pedestrians?
                   The Environment?
                   People’s health?

Example:
Traffic congestion causes people to feel stressed, which may make them dangerously angry.
It also makes people to be late for work or school as well as packages to be late for delivery.
Additionally, traffic congestion slows emergency services so fireman and ambulance drivers cannot quickly reach the people they need help.
Finally, it wastes fuel, which is bad for the environment.

02) What is the cause of the problem?

For example:

Traffic congestion happens because too many cars are on too small of a road (or too small of a bridge, tunnel, parking lot, etc.).

[Problem because reason

03a) Create three (3) solutions to the problem.

(This task should already be completed from your TitanPad)

Also, remember your essay about the city with the traffic problems.

Remember the main questions to consider when improving transportation:
Is it more efficient?
Is it safer?
Is it more convenient?
Is it more environmentally friendly?
Is it scientifically or financially feasible?

Your solutions can be a mix of:
inventions or different modes of transport.
                 rules or policies.
                 city engineering projects.

03b) What are one or two good things that may happen because of the solution?
What are one or two bad things that may happen because of the solution?

03c) What are two advantages and to disadvantages to each solution?

(Fill out the chart to answer
questions 3a, 3b, & 3c)
3a)
Solutions
3b) Positive consequences
3b) negative consequences
3c) advantages
3c) disadvantages

04)  Which solutions are more or less safe, more or less Exciting/Attractive, more or less expensive, more or less environmentally friendly, more or less efficient, more or less convenient, more or less futuristic, more or less traditional.

Rank your Solutions:  1= most  3= least
 (write number twice if same)

Solution 1
Solution 2
Solution 3
safe

Futuristic

Environmentally friendly

Exciting/Attractive

EXAMPLE 4) Rank your Solutions:  more, less, most, least, or same

05) Look at Your chart from task 4. Write three sentences comparing your solutions.  (Using the comparative or superlative form: more, less, most, least, same, whereas).

Page 147 in listening & speaking book can help you with comparative and superlative.

1.

2.

3.

5 EXAMPLE:
1) Bike lanes are more efficient than speed cameras because people only slow down when they see the camera.  However, bike lanes are always visible.

2. High speed rail is the most futuristic and bike lanes are the least modern.

3) High-speed rail is the most attractive because it is very fast, new, and exciting, whereas speed-cameras make people angry because of paying fines.

06) What is the best solution? Why? Okay

EXAMPLE 6: Public transportation is the best solution to fix traffic congestion because it is the most certain to reduce the number of cars on the road. Although many people do not like to ride the public bus or metro, it is necessary to make public transportation more exciting and attractive because we simply do not have enough room for cars.

07) Go back to task 1. Ask three to four rhetorical question based on your description of the problem. This will be your introduction.

Go to Page 142 in listening and speaking book for more info on rhetorical questions.

EXAMPLE 7:
Have you ever been afraid of flying?
Are you stressed when there is turbulence?
Do you feel scared when you hear about a plane crash?

Make a keynote presentation, padlet, or Movie:

FORMAT for presentation:

Slide 01: Group members and Company name
Slide 02: (The problem)
Slide 03: Task 7 (Rhetorical questions that describe effects the problem)
Slide 04: Task 2 (The cause of the problem)
Slide 05:  Task 3/ Solution 1 (Advantages and positives)
Slide 06:  Task 3/ Solution 1 (Disadvantages and Negatives)
Slide 07:  Task 3/ Solution 2 (Advantages and positives)
Slide 08:  Task 3/ Solution 2 (Disadvantages and Negatives)
Slide 09:  Task 3/ Solution 3 (Advantages and positives)
Slide 10:  Task 3/ Solution 3 (Disadvantages and Negatives)
Slide 11:  Task 5
Slide 12:  Task 6

Transportation problems and solutions

Discuss the problems and solutions
of present-day and future transportation options.

Main questions to consider when improving transportation:

Is it more efficient?
Is it safer?
Is it more convenient?
Is it more environmentally friendly?
Is it scientifically or financially feasible?

 Common transport issues and worries:
Cost, energy, environmental impact, commute time, congestion, safety, convenience, accessibility, image, popularity, scientific feasibility, cultural sensitivity, tradition, climate, etc.

Task: Look at the 15 transportation solutions.
With one or two partners using Titan pad
Describe what transportation problem is trying to be solved.
What are advantages and disadvantages to each solution?
(What consequences will the solutions cause to happen)?

 Titan pad format:
#) Problem:
Positive Consequence:
Solution Advantage:
Negative Consequence
Solution Disadvantage:

 EXAMPLE:
 Mixed-use building
(eg Burj_Khalifa)
Problem: Shopping, living and working places are often far away from each other.
Positive Consequence: People do not have to commute  by car.
Solution Advantage: People can work and live in the same building and shop next door.
Negative Consequence: Many people drive to see the building and it causes a big parking problem. Also, many strangers come near people's home.
Solution Disadvantage: Skyscrapers are very expensive to build.

  EXAMPLE:
 Aerial tramway
(Teleférico Salta)
Problem:  Quickly getting to the top of a mountain near a city
Positive Consequence: People do not need to drive up a winding road up the mountain.
Solution Advantage: People can start their journey from the middle of the city.
Negative Consequence: Taxi drivers will have less work. Also, the sky becomes cluttered.
Solution Disadvantage: Many people are afraid of heights.

These are 15 SOLUTIONS.
What problems are they fixing?
What's good and bad about these solutions?

1) Driver-less cars (eg. Google car)
2) High speed-limit (eg. Germany's Autobahn)
3) Congestion charge (eg. London)

 4) Electric cars (Tesla motors)

5) Subway/metro (eg. Dubai)

6) Car share program / Carpool lane
7) Hoverbike or hoverboard

 8) More or wider roads

 9) 100,000+ people per km2  (eg.  Mong Kok Island, Hong Kong)

 10) Bike lanes (eg. Amsterdam)

 11) Flying cars

 12) High-speed rail (eg. Shanghai Maglev)

                           13) Fuel Tax

                   14) Catamaran or Ferries

                          15) Banning Cars
